Our recent webinar spotlighted the urgent need for action around growing threats to critical federal programs—including Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), HUD Section 811, and HOME—that make affordable, accessible, community-based housing possible for people with disabilities.
Speakers—including Kim Johnson (National Low-Income Housing Coalition), Deborah Thrope (National Housing Law Project), Gregory Robinson (Autistic Self Advocacy Network), Jennifer Matthis (Bazelon Center for Mental Health), and Alía Fierro (US Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Development Committee)—came together for the webinar to explore immediate concerns about the proposed federal budget. They discussed the budget’s possible impact on disability-forward housing, and how the appropriations and reconciliation process works. The speakers also shared clear ways advocates can get involved to defend these critical programs from damaging cuts.
Presenters also addressed major threats such as proposed work requirements and time limits on federal housing assistance, which could potentially jeopardize the housing stability of millions of disabled people. The webinar closed with a call to action from our Managing Director, Allie Cannington, underscoring the importance of contacting elected representatives and continuing to advocate against policies that create barriers to housing for people with disabilities.
