Ford Foundation’s Disability Economic Summit

A group of panelists, with and without disabilities, of different genders and races, along with a sign language interpreter, is on a small stage. Audience members sitting around tables watch the panelists. Behind the panelists, a large projector screen displays a sign that says “Disability Economic Summit. Ford Foundation.” To the right of the text, there is a graphic design with red, purple, and yellow circles, squares, and asymmetric shapes overlapping.

We were honored to attend and present at the Ford Foundation’s Disability Economic Summit at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.

The Summit brought together leaders from a wide range of fields, all anchored around economic opportunity for disabled people and shifting the norm where disabled people are left out of conversations about our nation’s affordability crisis.

Our co-founder and CEO, Micaela, addressed this directly, sharing our vision to build affordable housing that fosters inclusion for people with and without disabilities across access needs.

We learned from other leaders expanding access in home care, fair wages, entrepreneurship, public benefits, and more. We were also thrilled to be there to celebrate the official launch of Artichoke Credit Union, a first-of-its-kind credit union for people with disabilities!

The Summit was filled with people imagining a future where systems are redesigned to serve the people they are built for. As we build a disability-forward housing future, it was incredible to be surrounded by people who are proving that a better future is possible.

Micaela Connery, a tall white woman with long brown hair, wearing a matching green shirt-and-pants set with floral detailing, speaks to an audience from a small conference stage. There is a sign language interpreter standing behind her. Behind them, a large projector screen displays a slideshow and closed captions. The slideshow displays two pictures side-by-side. One picture shows two people taking a selfie in construction vests and hard hats, and the other is an aerial shot of three people holding a large sheet of paper with architectural plans.
